ENDANGERED NOPD POLICE OFFICER APPARENTLY FACED WITH AN AK-47 REPORTEDLY FIRES ON SUBJECT on 2400 Franklin Ave, at or near a Baptist Church. We understand that the officer is ok, and we have not heard confirmation yet if someone was struck, although the officer requested EMS on a code 3. (copy of our !alert issued on 6- 20-10 at 9:51PM)
Synopsis:
Monitoring the scanners, ProjectNOLA volunteers heard a a female NOPD officer shout on the radio that they were working 94s (that officers were in the immediate area of shots being fired), which was the very quickly followed by a male officer shout 108, 108! (police signal code for officer's life in immediate danger, requesting emergency assistance). The male officer shouted that they were in front of a church and to start more units. The location of the incident now established, the officer identified his unit number as being 1562, that the subject was 95g (illegally had a firearm), and that they had a crime scene. Moments later, the officer told the dispatcher that they needed rank and homicide (which was our first indication that an officer-related shooting had occurred), quickly followed by a request for a perimeter to be set up around the area, in the event that more people were armed. Officer then checked with dispatch to make sure that EMS was enroute on a code 3 (highest priority). Rank unit 540 then came on air, and asked the officer what happened. The officer shouted that their was a subject with an AK-47 that was shooting at them, and just to send more units.

Armed Male Fatally Wounded by Police
New Orleans, LA – Members of the New Orleans Police Department’s Homicide Section are investigating the death of an unidentified male who was fatally shot by Fifth District New Orleans Police Officers. As of this time, the officers’ names have not been made available. The incident occurred on June 20, 2010, shortly before 8:30 P.M., in the 2400 block of Franklin Avenue.
According to investigators, Fifth District officers responded to a call of "shots fired" at a park near the intersection of Law Street and Franklin Avenue. Upon their arrival, the officers were directed to an individual carrying an assault rifle walking on Franklin Avenue from the park in a southbound direction. Subsequently, the officers confronted the perpetrator at which time he was ordered to drop the assault rifle. The perpetrator then raised the rifle towards three officers and the officers fired several shots striking him in the body. Emergency medical technicians were summoned to the scene where the perpetrator was pronounced dead.
During a preliminary investigation, officers recovered an assault rifle with a fully loaded magazine and a loaded semi automatic pistol was recovered in the vicinity of the same area.
Another individual in the 2100 block of Music Street was located suffering from a gunshot wound to the ankle and is listed in stable condition. This injury is believed to have been sustained at the time of this incident.
Homicide Sergeant Daniel McMullen is in charge of this ongoing investigation and the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office to review his findings. Members of the Public Integrity Bureau were on the scene to conduct an independent review.
As per standard policy, the unnamed Fifth District Officers were placed on administrative reassignment pending a review by the Superintendent of Police.
