12-13-10 @ 10am - A 62r in progress was dispatched on 900 Elmira Ave in the 4th Dist. In a supplemental, dispatcher advised that the complainant watched the perp flee the scene, and run into a house on 800 Newton. It was unknown if the perp was fleeing to Newton, or if perhaps he was burglarizing another house.
As their were no units available to take the call for service, the dispatcher raised 4th Dist. rank on the air, and advised him of the situation. Rank asked for the whereabouts of a particular patrol unit, and was advised by the dispatcher that the unit was en route to University to issue a citation on an earlier 20i. Rank then ordered the dispatcher to drop the 62r to a CODE 1 CALL, articulating that it was because he did not have any units to respond right now.
I did not hear why rank elected not to take the call himself, or ask another rank to take it. I did not hear anyone raise the unit en route to the hospital, and ask where they currently were. As I am just logging on to the scanners this morning, I do not know what the other units are presently working on, or how short the district may be this morning.
From the radio chatter, their did not appear to be any reason to believe that it was a prank call.
